What is free running?

Freerunning is all about using your environment to express yourself. It’s a combination of running, jumping, climbing, vaulting and somersaulting. Think urban gymnastics.

Where did your passion for free running originate from?

As an overweight 15 year old I liked sport but was never very good at it. I saw freerunning in a couple of Channel 4 documentaries called Jump London and Jump Britain and I was amazed at how these people could move! I decided it was what I wanted to do, started copying what I could find online and changed my whole routine. I started eating healthily, hitting the gym and getting outdoors and moving as much as possible. In the first 3 months I lost 2 stone and felt amazing. 10 Years later and I am still doing it, the passion has never died.

Do you have any advice for anyone looking to take up free running?

Firstly search online for local parkour or freerunning groups. Almost everywhere will have a small community of people who train and generally freerunners are always willing to help new people looking to get involved in the sport! Failing that, head onto youtube and watch a few freerunning videos for inspiration, go outside and give it a go! Simple as that. Start small and build your way up. The best thing about freerunning is everyone can do it, it’s all about self expression and movement!

We heard you recently got back from performing in Dubai, could you explain what that involved?

Before Christmas I was flown out to perform at the Sharjah Water Festival working with Flow Events Me (http://floweventsme.com/). I was involved in 2 shows, one which took place in a skate park and was working with skaters, bmxer’s, trials bikes, scooters, football freestylers and a live MC all tied into a 30 minute show with some crowd participation and plenty of incredible tricks. The other show took place on a BagJump (http://floweventsme.com/bagjump2/), a huge airbag into which we jumped from 7m, 10m and 30m doing multiple somersaults and twists. We would do 3 of each show a day and so it was very intensive job but so much fun! Check out a video of the action here:

How did you become involved in the fitness industry?

I have been coaching from the age of 15 and always enjoyed sport. In college I did Sports at A-level and went on to get a 1st Class Honours degree at Bournemouth University in Sports Development & Coaching Sciences. I managed to pick up coaching and performance work over the years, and coming out of University I decided it was what I wanted to do full time and so began networking as much as possible and I managed to make that a reality. Eating healthily, but in a delicious and fun way became a big part of my routine too and so I started to make my own recipes and share them on my Instagram and Facebook accounts. Over time I developed my skills and my following began to grow. It came to the point that I decided to start my own blog, Macro Mitch (www.macromitch.com) and now get approached by all sorts of companies, from supplements to yoghurts to help create new recipes for them!

Yes, we have noticed that you are also quite the chef! What is your favourite or most popular recipe?

I am a huge fan of Protein Pancakes and this is one of the simplest and most delicious recipes to make. Often people end up with rubber discs that are horrible to eat, these are far from that!

My most popular recipe however is my Protein Bundt Cake. This hasn’t had a single bad review, with everyone from my friends to my grandparents saying how amazing it tastes and that they can’t believe it is healthy!

How many times a week do you train and what is your training regime like?

I don’t follow a specific regime as it were as I like to keep things varied and challenge my body as much as possible. I train almost every day but varying the type of training I do, from freerunning/ gymnastic specific exercises, to Olympic & compound lifting, Crossfit and rock climbing. I allow myself to rest on the weekends, but more often than not I still manage to squeeze in some training in one form or another!

Generally I begin the week with a heavy leg session, usually in the form of Overhead Squats or power cleans, followed by assistance work such as weighted lunges and a few other exercises. As I train at a Crossfit facility (www.nmaperformance.co.uk) I will often finish the session with the gym workout of the day which could be anything! I have 2 days a week of gymnastic training where I work on new somersaults and twists in a safe environment, honing new freerunning skills to eventually take to the streets. The rest of the week will be a combination of compound lifts, ring conditioning work and even handbalancing practice.

Proudest achievement to date?

The fact that I have been able to travel the world performing in all sorts of places, worked on photo-shoots and shows with brands such as Nike, T-Mobile and The NFL and also encourage others to get active and live a healthy life.

Mitch Lee’s top tips:

Always be positive. No matter what, there is something you can be thankful for and if you keep giving out positive energy, you will eventually receive some back!

Don’t force yourself to have a diet you don’t enjoy. In fact, don’t even think of it as a diet. Food should be something you enjoy so get creative and work out what you enjoy and make it work for you!
